Motivated Players That Should Offer Extra Value for Your Fantasy Football Team
Here is a good read that might help you make some decisions come draft day. Michael Fabiano at NFL.com has put together a great read. He lists NFL players who are extra motivated, for one reason or another, to perform this year.
In my opinion he is right on the money with a majority of the players listed, however, there are a few that seem out of place on the list;
Michael Turner barring injury will not be on the field enough for you to care about him on your fantasy football roster outside of being a being a mandatory hand cuff to LT. Motivated or not you are nothing more than a cheerleader when your on the sidelines watching.
Josh McCown has been in similar situations in the past and hasn’t done much at all. He competed for a job in Arizona and went nowhere except on to Detroit to compete for a job where he went nowhere. Add to that the fact that both the defenses within the AFC West are stronger and his line is suspect at best. All the motivation in the world isn’t going to help him be successful if he’s throwing off his back.
Also note, Michael mentions Eric Johnson as a sleeper. If you’ve been reading my off season refreshers and/or listening to the Bruno Boys podcasts who know that my Bruno Boys teammate (and big 49er fan) Marc Caviglia and I also have Johnson pegged as a sleeper too(that is is if he is healthy). Through another star by his name and keep an eye on him throughout training camp.
Bottom line, Michael makes many very good observations that you and I should be factoring in on draft day.

I agree with some of them but Fabiano is only selling readers and inexperience owners this time. Players who have secured their financial futures, are not motivated to perform for money and most of these players are motivated (just like everyone else in the league)for various other reasons.

You make some valid points! True, many of these guys wouldn’t have gotten this far with money as the only motivator but at the same time it is hard to completely dismiss contract years as motivators. We see proof of that when players hold out, retire or move on to another team because they aren’t getting the cash (and who can blame them).
Nice story…I think Josh McCown in the right situation could actually be a decent NFL QB. The problem with every player is that w/o decent talent around you, its very difficult to be successful.
At any rate, its always good to see who will be free agents in ’08 – especially for keeper leaguers who should be scooping up guys like Turner for success next year.
Thanks for the comment Beavercat. You are correct, it does help to have a good surrounding cast. And he does have a few players in Oakland around him but I will stick with what I said about staying upright, that will be the key.
I am glad you liked the post. Don’t be a stranger!
No doubt…last year a pretty capable QB (albeit mistake prone but fantasy friendly) Aaron Brooks never had a chance behind that line, so you’re right about that being a HUGE concern. Personally (I’m a diehard 49′er fan) I love seeing the Raiders suck so I’m hoping their line is terrible again.
You sound just like my Bruno Boys Fantasy Football Show co-host Marc Caviglia. He is a Niners fan and Raider Hater.
I agree that Eric Johnson could be a good sleeper especially that the Saints have a passing attack that gets everybody involved. Also when he wasn’t injured he was a pretty solid player for the Niners.
Thanks for the comment. Check out the NFC South podcast for a little more info on Eric Johnson.
