Fantasy Football Tip Archives

First I’d like to wish you a very happy and prosperous opening week. They don’t make many Sundays quite as good as the first. Oh and unless you are really hung over, you might want to make sure you get some good exercise in the morning so that you are prepared for a long day on the couch. Now lets get to it.

After a quick glance at this weeks games, I had a few starts, sits and sleepers that I just couldn’t keep to myself. See what you think!

Start em if you got em…

Seattle D – The Rams start the season with injuries galore and will be going on the road against a solid defense in a very loud stadium. This one has blowout written all over it. I’m thinking 5 sacks, 2 picks, a TD and -13 points allowed. Read the rest of this entry

Rule Breaking Fantasy Football Draft Strategy

I did a few things different this year both in preparing for my draft and in basic strategy on draft day. They are a bit unconventional but i am confident that they will pay off when its all said and done. Look them over and see if you think I’m crazy or onto something.

Two Rule Breakers…

First, I drastically reduced the amount of studying I did. For the past few years I poured over ever freakin stat that I could and read the Pro  Football Prospectus front to back (have you ever seen the size of that thing). I sure knew my fantasy football – which works great for talking to you guys – but talk about paralysis by analysis. It defintely didn’t help me since the past few years have actually been some of my worst (top five finishes both seasons in both leagues but only in the money once – not living up to my standards). It was time to lighten the load and step back a bit.

Second, I did some reverse draft strategy this year for the 19th season of one of my two leagues. In other words I do not suscribe to the “must have a running back in the first two rounds” strategy. I have been getting burned on RB’s the past few years so I decided I would heed the advise of the guys on the Fantasy Football Weekly podcast and go for  WR’s who over the past few years have been the safest bets while at the same time adding my own twist by addressing the quarterback position early and often (since we start two in this league). So, my goal going into my draft was I wanted two top ten QB’s (as I said we start two) and two top ten WR (we start 3) before taking a RB. Here’s how the entire draft turned out. See if you think I have a team that can compete.

Must Listen To Fantasy Football Podcasts

Training camps are in full swing and your fantasy research should be in high gear.  Hell, I’m sure some of you already have the magazine (old-school but handy in the john) and I’m sure many of you have been wearing out the link to your favorite fantasy stops on the web. And that my frioend is a good thing because its what champions like you and I do to stay ahead of the competiton. But are you doing all you can?

Today, I want to offer up a few more more resources that you could take advantage of  when you can’t be reading but rather listening. In this post I give you four of my favorite resources to get my favorite – and most effective – form of fantasy football study…podcasts.

File this one in the “why didn’t I think of that” column. As I was sifting through all of fantasy football news today, one story jumped out at me. Jacob over on FantasyFootballFools.com pointed out a painfully obvious strategy about how to truly rank players on your fantasy football cheatsheet to prepare for draft day.

If you’ve been playing fantasy for any amount of time then I’m sure you’ve discovered that just because a player is ranked in a particular spot on a cheatsheet, it doesn’t mean he will perform better than some of the guys after him and in some cases even deserves to be on your squad. In other words, it doesn’t mean squat what your cheatsheet says if your “spidy sense” or gut is telling you otherwise.

Jacob has come up with – what I think is – a better way for you to evaluate and rank players to get the best out of your draft. He dubs it the “pick or pass” method and he uses it to evaluate the 2009 top 24 fantasy running back rankings .

I know, I know, I said I was done with this site – and I am (on a regular basis anyway) – but I guess this fantasy blogging stuff is just to damn hard to put down, and well… I kinda miss you guys.

Anyway, I wanted to throw this out there for you.  Last night my buddy and I were throwing around some names of guys that we thought we would like to have on our team this year.

Read them over and see if you agree or disagree and then, in the coments below, throw down some of the names that may be circling around in your head.

Lee Evans WR (BUF) – While everyone in your league jumps all over the TO train, wait a round or two and grab Evans. He showed in the past that he can be a monster when there is someone else keeping the defence honest.

Roy Williams WL (DAL) – Remember him? He still has skills and the Cowboys will still have a good offense with or without TO. Roy will be the go to guy.

Percy Harvin WR (MIN) – I’m not as high on this guy as my buddy seems to be but there is no doubt the the Vikes intend to give him tohe opportunity to succeed. If he is as good as advertised, he could do just that.

Don’t break the bank on him because  I really don’t see him as being much more than a bit player for your team.  Kinda like a feast or famine type player. 2 plus TD’s one week and goose eggs for the next two.

Chris Henry WR (CIN) – With housh in Seattle and Palmer healthy, Chris Henry should get the opportunity to mix it up for the Bengals.

Jerome Harrison RB (CLE) – He is turning heads in Minicamp. Could he be a poor mans Leon Wahington for Mangini’s Browns?

Kyle Orton QB (DEN) – No he is not Jay Cutler but he has all the guys that Cutler had to through to and the same crappy defense to compensate for. How hard could it be to throw to a guy like Brandon Marshall?

I know this list is incomplete but that is were you come in. Help us build a nice list by posting your picks in the comments below.

But anyway, there ya go. That should start getting the fantasy gears turning.
