You and I both know that NFL football is the greatest sport on the planet. Hell, neither one of us would be sitting here talking about it in the middle of March if it wasn’t right?
Now speaking of the best, today I’d like to share my thoughts with you on what is arguably one of the best - if not the best - division in football; the AFC South. Need proof? Look no further than last years playoffs. Three teams made the tourney. Top to bottom, this division should be about as competitive as it gets in 2008.
How does it stack up? Lets take a look.
2008 AFC North Final Standings:
1) Jacksonville Jaguars
2) Indianapolis Colts
3) Tennessee Titans
4) Houston Texans
Thoughts:
This division is so hard to call, but I think the Jags can do it this year.
Even though Dungy’s last year may provide for a little extra motivation for the Colts - plus the fact that they are just damn good - I think Jacksonville has plugged a few holes and gained a ton of confidence by finally getting to and winning in the playoffs.
The Titans are what they are. Great lines on both sides of the ball will keep them close in every game - at least the ones that Haynesworth starts in anyway. But until Vince Young gets a receiver - and stops being a puss - the Titans will be ultra competitive but not great.
As for the the Texans, they are getting better. But I just don’t think they are as good as the three teams just mentioned.
Fantasy Notes:
David Gerrard is a guy who could provide a ton of value in this years draft. He seems like the kind of guy that could be forgotten by many owners come draft day. He was an exceptional QB2 - and spot QB1 - the last half of the year. With the addition of a motivated Jerry Porter, things could get even better DG.
Not much has changed for the Colts but you can count me out when it comes to Marvin Harrison. They are saying he may not be ready for the start of camp. But who the hell knows how much stock you can put into what the Colts say. Last year he was a freakin gametime decision for three quarters of the season.
The acquisition of TE Alge Crumpler by the Titans looks like a perfect fit. He will be a reliable target anywhere on the field and should help open up the running game a bit.
Houston signed Chris Brown which is intriguing. He is definitely an nice addition to a below average backfield but he is injured every other game (sound familiar Texan fans?). Also, it is very likely the Texans will grab a back in the draft.
There ya go. Nothing to ground breaking but definitely a few things for you to chew on until I’m back in a few days with my assessment of the AFC West.
