With the AFC East taken care of, it is time to move on to the AFC North. I was a little surprised there weren’t any Jets fans giving me hell for picking the Bills ahead of them. But, perhaps its early or, perhaps they know I’m right.
This week I suspect I will get a little flack from a very loyal, alway proud fan base. Why you say! Just look at who I’ve crowned the AFC North champs.
2008 AFC North Final Standings:
1) Cleveland Browns
2) Pittsburgh Steelers
3) Cincinnati Bengals
4) Baltimore Ravens
Thoughts:
With the exception of one team, this division has been fairly quiet so far this year in free agency.
I love what the Browns have done so far. Outside of upgrading an already potent receiving corp with the signing of Donte Stallworth they added more depth on the offensive line with the signing of G Rex Hadnot. They improved upon a defense - that really needed improvement - by adding DT Corey Williams from the Packers to shore up the d-line.
I hate to count the Steelers out, but I just think its the Browns time to step it up. I think this is the year the Browns take down the Steelers at least once. That should be good enough for them to claim the title.
Until I see Cinci do something beside waive goodbye to their defensive players they will stay in third. Oh wait, they did get LB Darryl Blackstock from Arizona (who?).
As far a Baltimore goes; new coach, old QB and old defense; might as well just rebuild.
Fantasy Notes:
Derek Anderson and the rest of the Brown offensive studs won’t come cheap this year and for good reason. Donte Stallworth will be the third option and could become a decent spot starter (sounds familiar doesn’t it?).
Mewelde Moore is an intriguing pick-up for the Steelers. Are they telling us something about Willie Parker? Hmmm. As a Vikings fan I will miss the him him but ya can’t have all the good running backs. Mewelde is pretty versatile and should be utilized on special teams and in the passing game.
My eyes will be focused on seeing what Cinci does with the running game. Which is pretty much a mute point if they can’t stop anyone on defense.
I think it is pretty safe to say that the air has been let out of McNair. Not to much to get excited about fantasy-wise here quite yet. Stay tuned.
Alright, another day, another division. This whole blogging thing is really starting to come back to me now. See you in a few days when I will be tackling what I think is the best division in professional football.

1There is no way the brownies win the division, no chance. Offensively the Steelers are more complete and the Steelers are by far better on defense and that will only improve this year. In 2 games against the Steelers last they had a total of 384 yards, the Steelers has almost 800. That is not a very potent offense. They only beat one team that made the playoffs last year, Seahawks. We’ll see what they do with a tougher schedule this year.
You should have probably looked at the schedule for next year before you such a pathetic prediction. I count at least 10 losses for the Browns next year.

2Thanks Drew,
I knew the Steelers fans would object. I wouldn’t expect any less. There may not be a more proud and dedicated fan base in the league.
The schedule isn’t out yet but - looking at it right now - they are solid team on paper and solid teams compete with anyone and win games reguardkess of schedule.
I remember thinking the the Browns had a brutal schedule last year and they finished 10-6. Hell, they almost beat the Steelers in Heinz Field. The Brown grew up a lot last year.
It is close and it could go either way but I’m stickin with the Brownies.

3Ahem, Brownies will win the AFC north next year no matter what their schedule is simply because of the loose ends tied down in free agency. No matter who they play, they’re still expected to win and I think they’ve showed that in games against higher end teams in 2007. I’m looking forward to the likely 2 or more games the Browns - Steelers will play, always good. Don’t be so down on them, it’s Believeland remember? Go Browns.

4As a Steeler Fan the I have to say that we might win the division but we have a brutal schedule (it is out)
Home:
AFC North
Texans
Colts
Chargers
Cowgirls
Giants
Away:
AFC North
Jags
Titans
Patriots
Eagles
Deadskins
We can win the division but we have to stay healthy and have Ben upright for most of the season. The Browns offense will be good but as seen last year, DEFENSE wins championships that is why Pittsburgh has to be the winner, Cleveland is still a year away from having a “good” defense.
Will Lewis be fired if he doesn’t turn things around in Cincy?

5Corey,
Wish I had what you’re smoking. #1. Anderson was great at quarterback until defenses started keying in on him. Like most great players out-the-blue, there wasn’t enough film to figure out his tendancies; now there is. Look for the Brownies quarterback to suffer from the “Sophomore Slump” and Brady Quinn to get a few snaps.
#2. Ben is focused. Clearly the best quarterback in the division has his sights on another ring this year. If the Steeler can avoid Jacksonville in the playoffs then the title isn’t to far to reach. We have Indy’s # and the Patsy’s are crippled, look for a record of 12-4 with a deep run in the playoffs.
#3 Tomlin’s second year. Mike Tomlin is in his second season, which means everyone is getting on the same page. Last year you could tell in crunch time that wasn’t the case. Look for better execution this year.
#4 It’s hard to beat your daddy. Certain teams suffer from not mentally being able to beat the father of certain divisions. Steelers rule the division, always have always will.

7Thanks for stoppin’ Corey,
Thanks for being civil. You make some good points and yes the Browns d is the wildcard here. But I will stand by my pick at this point.
Oh and Marvin Lewis. I would think he would get the ax. He did turn the ship around but what-have-ya-done- for-me-lately…not much. Plus, he came in as a defensive guru and we see how thats gone. But then again, stranger things have happened.
Great name by the way.

8Thanks Big C,
Hands down the best argument so far. I’ll even admit that you have moved me a little closer to the changing my pick. But we’ll see. Alot of offseason left.
Way to bring it. Stop back any time.

10Steelers are on the down slide….(6-10 is not out of the picture) Browns qill rule this division. Repeating at least 10-6….13-3 may not be put of the question.

12I beleve that the browns moves and the talent upgrade in free agency is intriguing, but as a steeler fan i wouldn’t count us down and out yet. Ben has improved and is more than a qb who just manages the game. I also do not believe that big free agency moves are always successful. The locker room can be a funny place when you lose a couple games or the “new” guys do not step it up. The steelers have played through adversity, heck they won a superbowl after letting plaxico go to free agency. Do the steelers need to reload–yes–but there is still a lot of talent on this team to compete for another crown. I would say the browns would seem to be the team that should give them the run for their money, but the fixing of the OL and the return of A. Smith and W. Parker are the keys. If they can return to form from injuries and the steelers can put some new blood in to spell them in key times of games they should still be a formidable team!!!!

14The Browns are definitely primed to take control. I cannot wait for that waste of a 104 mil QB to get sacked 20 times a game behind that sweet roll chomping poor excuse of an offensive line in pukesburgh. Browns had a SUPPOSED tough schedule last year, and turned out 10-6. There is ONLY ONE thing that has stood in the way of the Browns controlling the division: THEIR HEADS! They don’t defeat the Stoolies because they psyche them out. NO MORE. The Stools were 8-7 against the rest of the NFL last year and the Browns were 10-4. We are MUCH better now and you are CLEARLY worse!
Have fun with the delusuions Pukers

17You gotta be a hardcore, biased, Cleveland fan if you think the Browns are going to take over the division in 2008. I am willing to bet they go 6-10 and fight with the Ravens for second place. No way will they be able to contend with the Steelers IF Pittsburgh can keep a healthy offensive line. 9 out of 10 times the Steelers will beat Cleveland by at least 10. The Steelers have been consistently solid for the past decade or so and the Browns are no where near close to taking their crown that they’ve had for so long. Along with the daddy of the division they are the King on the throne. The Browns are and always will be their soft, humble servants.

18GIno,
Thanks for the comment. I am not a hardcore biased Browns fan. Just a neutral observer.
That said, you have to be a hardcore biased Steeler fan to not even give the Brown a chance.
Thanks for stopping I appreciate having passionate football fans, like yourself, making comments.

22Their is a brown, orange and white tank coming over the hill in AFC Northland. It has been redesigned with heavy armor for defense (Wiliams/Rogers alloy plates) and is offensivly powered by (Winslow/Edwards/Stallworth missles). This tank even has a spare gun. (a Anderson gun is in place and a Quiin gun can be inserted quickly) It runs on high octane (Thomas/Stienbeck) rocket fuel.

23Pitt lost their stud guard…lets see the last afc north team that lost their stud guard…um the bengals. What happened to them? Palmer couldnt stand up, and he wasnt as good. Wasn’t ben already sacked like 50 some times last year, he’s going get tim couch syndrome soon.
And whoever said that derek anderson was a flash in the pan, is right….that could be clevelands only mistake just trying to be good and not going for the chance of greatness w/ brady

25I will say it is way to early to predict anything (but it is fun trying), lets face facts that neither the Browns or the Steelers was or will be the king or daddy of the division for ever. They have both had times when they were strong and had times when they totally sucked. Outside of last year the Browns have pretty much sucked for the last 13 years (several of which they did not exist). Anyways to say the Steelers were always and will always be king I would suggest you do a little history checking just to double check your facts. I remember a certain game back in 1989 at the old Three Rivers that went a little something like this Cleveland 51- Steelers 0. Of course we (as Browns fans) have taken our lumps, but so have the Steelers. Over almost the last decade the Browns have had their behinds handed to them by the Steelers. 1990’s through 2007- Steelers 25 wins to the Browns 7. However lets go back a little bit further shall we. From the first time the Browns/Steelers started playing each other back in the 50’s it took the Steelers 4 years before they even got their first win against the Browns (sound familiar). During the 50’s & 60’s it was Cleveland 31 wins to the Steelers 9 wins. Then of course there was the 70’s where the Steelers were Super Champs many times over and owned the Browns through that decade 15-5. In the 80’s it flipped back to the Browns Favor 12 wins to 8. So as you can see there is an Ebb and flow to this long standing rivalry (lets hope it never goes away again) and I suspect this last decade of the Pittsburgh owning Cleveland is about over due for a change. And I am sure that any Steelers Fan that is intelligent and not just posturing would have to agree. Nuff Said

27Thanks Robert,
The banter - back and forth - is a lot like what I have been experiencing for many years myself. I am a Vikings fan and I live on the border of Minnesota and Wisconsin. Some of my best friends are Packer fans - one’s a Lions fans but he has NOTHING to say lol - and there are a ton of Chicago Bears fans - that attend the two colleges in town here.
These Green Bay and Chicago fans are very much like the Steeler fans. They have no respect for their rivals because they don’t have any rings. I have used similar arguments for the Vikes; They have tons of division titles and playoff appearances and have been to more Super Bowls. But, until they - like the Browns - get a ring, you and I can expect that disrespect to continue. I just take it game to game and have fun with it.

28Corey,
Thanks for the response, yeah the Browns pretty much get no respect. And they have won several NFL Championships (before it was renamed) same game different name. They won in the 50’s several times and of course the 1964 Championship. They were also undefeated an entire season, however that is when they were in the AFL, just prior to joining the NFL. I would agree football is no fun without the rivalries and for the Browns the Steelers/Browns rivalry was always the biggest. When the Browns returned to the NFL the feeling was just not there until within the last couple of years. Anyways at least the someone respects the Browns a little bit (the person who make the NFL Schedule) the Browns have 5 primetime games this year, three Monday night football games, one Sunday night primetime and a Thursday night primetime. Yeah and how bout them Lions !!! LOL I just hope the guy the Browns picked up from them (BIG Baby) brings his Monster defense and not the other……

30The Bengals will rule the AFC North. They have experience other teams don’t have. They also have added key players. I think the Browns will do good because of key acquisitions but QB Derek Anderson lacks experience needed to win in the AFC (I know he did last year but he flopped when it counted) and the their defense is questionable. The Steelers will still do decent but their only true move is extending Big Ben’s contract. The Ravens look to be another flop they haven’t done anything.

I think you are the first representing for the Bengals. Should be interesting how they navigate the rest of the offseason.
