Posted by Corey Koehler as Fantasy Football Sleeper, Fantasy Football Start Em Sit Em
Can you feel the tension build every time you’re deciding on who to put into your starting line-up? Me too my friend. That could only mean one thing; it is crunch time.
It’s that time of the year where the championship money is within your grasp and the yearlong bragging rights are on the line. Your fantasy football league playoffs are only a handful of weeks away and you need that extra little something that will put you over the top. Here are few suggestions for you.
Start’em if you got’em
Marshawn Lynch RB (BUF) - Everything you watched him do last week, expect to see it again because the Dolphin’s just plain stink against the run. In fact, the only team in the league that is worse than Miami in that category is the Broncos (more on them later). Lynch had his break out game last week and tasted success NFL style. Look for him to build on last weeks performance with 125+ yards and one touchdown rushing with 4 catches for 50 yard and a touchdown receiving.
Final stats: 61 and a TD rushing. 3 for 24 receiving.
Final thoughts: Looks like Miami came to play defense this week.Justin Fargas RB (OAK) - This guy has been quietly getting it done the last few weeks and that should continue this week at home against Chicago. Believe it or not Oakland is 4th in the league at rushing the ball. Meanwhile, Da’ Bears are giving up 130 yards per game on the ground. I don’t see why Justin can’t post at least 100 and punch it in for a touchdown.
Final stats: 81 yards rushing, 5 catches for 23 receiving and zero touchdowns.
Final thoughts: Oakland had a hard time getting across the fifty. Must have been an ugly game to watch.
Sit’em if you’ve got em
Maurice Jones-Drew RB (JAC) - Unless you are desperate for a starter this week you better put him down against the Titans. They are playing lights-out by only allowing 66 yards per game on the ground. Add to that the fact that he is still splitting time with Fred Taylor and whoever else Jack decides to hand the ball to around the goalline and you have yourself a ticket to a low scoring week. Expect 40 yards and a big fat goose egg in the touchdown column.
Final stats: 101 and a TD rushing. 3 for 28 receiving.
Final thoughts: Had I known Haynesworth for Tennessee was going to be a late scratch, I might have look elsewhere for this pick.
Steve Smith WR (CAR) - Guess what Steve had the last time he faced the Falcons? One catch for 10 yards. Ouch! Besides that he really hasn’t been doing much of anything for a few weeks now and it is hard to imagine that he will do much better especially with the quarterback situation. Even if they play Vinnie and gloves will both likely be playing at less than 100%. And do you really want to put your playoff hopes in the hands of a third string QB if they can’t? I’ll let you answer that. As much as it hurts I think it is best to play it safe and sit the guy down until things get a little more stable for the Panthers. I doubt he gets much more than 4 catches for 45 yards and no touchdown.Final stats: 5 for 61 receiving
Final thoughts: Sucks if you own Steve Smith right now.
Tom Brady QB (NE) - He is on a bye and I thought it would be interesting to see what his name looked like underneath the sit’em headline. He’s not on my team so I think it looks pretty damn good. In my lock of the week TB goes for zero yards, zero touchdowns and still gets mentioned at least once on every NFL pre and post game show.
Sleepers: don’t be surprised if…
…Priest Holmes RB (KC) relives a little of the glory days this week against the Broncos worst ranked rushing defense. He won’t get all of the snaps but I bet he gets a big enough chunk to make him a solid number two running back in most leagues. The guy is a warrior and has been proving people wrong constantly. There is no reason why he shouldn’t be able to muster at least 100 yards and two touchdowns. Yep, I said two.
Final stats: 65 yards and 0 TD’s rushing. 2 for 14 receiving.
Final thoughts: Missed this one but who woulda thunk it. Like Miami above the Broncos defense looking to climbing out of the rushing defense cellar with a solid performance.…the Oakland Raiders Defense picks off Griese at least three times and returns one of them for a score. The Raiders have an excellent pass defense. They are fourth in defending the pass and are sixth in the league in picks (and we all know how well the Bears rockslingers protect the ball). Even if the Raiders don’t have the best rushing defense in the league, the Bears are 31st so it shouldn’t really matter. Raiders get 16 points allowed, 2 sacks, 3 int’s and a touchdown.
Final stats: 17 points allowed, 3 sacks, 1 fumble recovery, 0 int’s and 0 touchdowns.
Final thoughts: They held the Bears to 3 points until 3:11 left in the game when they gave up a 59 yard reception and then rushing touchdown from a turnover inside their five yard line. I am surprised there weren’t any picks especially when Grossman made it in to the game.
As always, that is not all my friend. There are a few other stops you should make before finalizing your starting lineup.
First, make sure you stop by and see how the Fantasy Football Librarian can help you. Every week she posts all of the start’em sit’em articles, player ranking posts and waiver wire lists that she can find so that you don’t have to hunt for them yourself. Check her out and tell her the Goat says hi.
Second, you can get more in-depth NFL player projections throughout the week by checking out the Bruno Boys website over on MVN.com.
Third, be on the lookout for the weekly fantasy football start’em sit’em podcast I co-host with Marc Caviglia.
One last thing. Subscribing to the Goat is at the all time low price of free. You can Subscribe to The Fantasy Football Goat by Email and have this stuff in your inbox seconds after I post it or you can subscribe in your feed reader or on your home page. 1Hi Corey.
Got some more tough decisions for sit em or start em. (I’m the guy in the really deep league.) Here we go:
1) QB situation (grim)
Griese
Huard
Huard typically plays good at home, but I think Priest will get many red zone carries. At the same time, Huard is hitting Gonzo left and right - and Gonzo seems to score at home. However, I could easily see him going this week w/out a touchdown pass, considering the chiefs may struggle moving the ball (as they have many times this year). In the end, this game will be very low scoring I think.
Griese - I know he’s not the best, but this guy is definitely going to pass the ball a lot. Even with the Oakland defense (3rd or 4th in passing D?), I feel like he’s going to get at least one or two TDs.
2) Team defense (good, but not sure who’s got the best chance to get consistent points):
Chicago
Oakland
NO
As you said above, I’m sure Oakland will pick off Griese a few times, but despite all their injuries the bears have given me consistent points each week (they’re 2nd in the league for sacks last I checked). So, who’s got the better chance to put up good/mid range points?
In the end, I’m just looking for someone who will play around what they’re expected to get point-wise. I don’t want any stinkers and I’m not looking for any big plays from these slots.

2Hey Guy,
Thanks for stopping by. That is quite a comment you have there.
QB…That is tough. It sounds to me like you have it figured out about as good as I would at this point. You’re practical side is leaning toward Huard and your “i have a feeling side” is leaning toward Griese (both in the QB and defense comments). If you feel that strongly about Griese than maybe he is your guy.
Def…Hmmm…NO and CHI are tempting. NO could get to the QB often and grab a few int’s if the Rams go into pass mode because they are getting whipped (i think it will be high scoring for both teams). Hester is always good to have on your side. I don’t trust the Bears quite yet but they are getting a little healthier and McCown gives up the rock (if they don’t just run it down Chicago’s throat). You know how I feel about Oakland.
how’s that? Clear as mud.

3Got a question. I’ve got 3 RB’s and I’ve gotta start 2. I have Adrian Peterson, Clinton Portis, and Justin Fargas. I definately start Peterson, but do I start Fargas over Portis?

4Hi Corey,
My first question is for my WR’S. I am in a 12 team league, and start 3 WR. We get points for punt returns. I have Terrell Owens, TJ Houshmandzadeh, Plaxico Burress, and Nate Burleson.
Also, I am thinking about putting Chatman in, and taking Mo Jo out… I just dont feel good about it, but I am thinking Tennessee DEF will stop Drew…. IF they can!
RB’S… We start 2… Marion Barber, Maurice Jones Drew, and Jesse Chatman
This could be the week I take over first place as I am currently second.
Thanks!

5Hi Saang Lee,
Thanks for stopping.
As tough as it is to go away from Portis, Fargas has the better match-up and the Raiders have been running the ball well the last few games. I’ll let you make the final call but I would lean toward Fargas.

6Hi Lois,
Thanks for stopping by.
Thats two times this week that I’ve heard of leagues giving points for punt returns. The other I addressed on the podcast.
Hmmm…Seeing as how Burleson will be playing reciever less with the return of Hackett, and possibly Branch this week, I think you stay with the other three WR’s. I don’t see any reason to bench TO, Housh or Burress. Any one of them could explode at any time.
I know how you feel about MJD but Chatman and Barber are the “safest bets.” Tennessee is tough and it is a divisional game the typically doesn’t have a lot of scoring anyway.

7Hi Corey. Wanted your quick opinion. I picked up Bulger, so now I have as options: Huard, Griese and Bulger.
Seems like historically Bulger does great off a bye. And, the NO pass D is terrible. Think this is my best option? The other two quarterbacks also have a chance of being replaced… (Griese less so… but still).

8Hey Guy,
Wow! I can;t believe somebody gave up on Bulger. Good for you. I would be all over him myself. Yeah, he is your best option this week.

9Some tough decisions this week. I need 2 wr’s, 1 rb and one flex from the following:
-Anquan Boldin
-Santonio Holmes
-Lee Evans
-Braylon Edwards (usually a no-brainer, but a tough match-up w/Pit)
-Justin Fargas
-Lendale white
Thanks

10Welcome Mo,
Thanks for stopping. Braylon Edwards not only is he a must start reguardless of match-up but do you remember Pittsburgh’s game against Denver a few weeks back.
The other three is a touch call. You have a luxury at that position. I think anyone you start out of those three will put up decent numbers. I like Evans, Holmes and Boldin in that order. The only reason I put Boldin last is because Warner has been hit or miss lately and the Lions d is play damn good. Also keep an eye on Holmes hamstring issue. But it is close.
If I had to pick I’d go Fargas. Not only do I think JAC/TEN will be low scoring but It always seems as if LenDale gets vultured at the goal line either by Young or Henry.
I am a big proponent of starting RB’s as flex starters but those are some good WR with good match-ups you have. I would roll with one of them.

11How do Corey?
I was curious your opinion about starting, Manning or Hasslebeck.
may sound a little silly, but Hasslebeck puts up some good number(mainly due to his nearly non-existant running option)
SD at home could put some pressure on Manning
a slightly less interesting question is for my terible WR situation.
this bye week has me without Moss, so Im looking at Engram,Randle El, and Ronald Curry.
(very excitiing, I know)
any ideas how I can improve this week?
thanks for your help!

13Hey Goggler,
Welcome!
I think you are right on track with your Hasselbeck assessment but I’m the type that would never bench Peyton for any reason. Also, Colts lack of receivers or not, the SD defense is soft against the pass.
Randle El hasn’t practiced much this week so thats a tricky situation. Engram will be used with or without Branch (but more without him of course).
Curry is hard to gauge. I like his chances more with McCown but they are concentrating more on the run in Oakland. In the comments above I point out a few other possible sleeper option you might want to explore.

14Hey Timbo,
You’re from New Zealand? Wow. How did you start watching NFL football?
Also, before I can help can you give me an idea of how starters you need at each position?

17I have a big dilemma in two areas. Should I start…
WR. 1) Derrick Mason(Ravens)
or
2) Chris Henry(Bengals)
RB. 1) Deshaun Foster(Panthers)
or
2) Justin Fargas(Raiders)
both these pairs have great matchups. Mason is working with a porous bengals secondary, but henry is hot target with palmer and is playing against a injured and banged up ravens secondary.
Deshaun Foster is a falcons killer. He and fargas with carry the ball rumerous times because of Qb’s who stink and have a hard time getting the ball to recievers. Both running backs are running against bad run defenses.
HEEELLP MEEE!!

18Thanks Dylan,
YOUR WHOLE LINE-UP? Don’t you like to play fantasy football? lol kidding of course….
QB - Palmer for sure.
RB - Watch Henry’s status. Henry would be my first choice because I’ve seen him perform but Smith could be fine.
WR - Evans for sure and then you choose between the other two. I would lean toward Ward but they will both perform.
TE - Heath Miller …not even close
D Steelers
Good luck,

19Timbo,
Cool. But yeah that is a time difference alright. Great to see you still follow it though. After all it is the best sport in the world.
Roethlisberger, Ben
Bush, Reggie
Grant, Ryan
Burress, Plaxico
Driver, Donald
Jennings, Greg
Gonzalez, Tony
Reed, Jeff
Seahawks, DST
Good luck,

20Hey Matt Jones,
I would like to see how Henry does first. Derrick Mason is the safe bet but if your feeling frisky you could start Henry. High risk, high reward.
I like Fargas out of those two.

Good luck everyone!

22What do think if I traded Romo for C. Palmer and TE Winslow? It looks like Palmer has a favorable schedule weeks 14, 15, 16, 17 during playoffs and I don’t have quality TE and I am stacked everywhere else (RB:LT, Edge, WR: TO,TJ Housman, H.Ward). I’m afraid Romo sits during final game of year.

23Hey smashmouth,
Thanks for stopping. Yeah it is always a concern losing your players because they are on winning teams.
Without know what’s available for a back-up QB or starting TE’s I’m not sure I can give you an accurate assessment. With that said…
It would be tough for me to trade Romo and I might try to use the waiver wire for a TE.
We don’t know for sure whether or not Romo will be sitting since there are quite a few games left and ya never know. if you think Palmer and Winslow can out perform Romo and another TE for the every other week before the last one then I say go for it.
Also, it seems like a fair deal to me overall but don’t forget you would be giving up the second highest scoring fantasy player in the world.
Does any one else have a few thoughts?
