When it comes to fantasy football defenses we all know about teams like Baltimore, Chicago and New England. Only problem is, being able to start one of those defenses every Sunday will come at a high price. Why not save those valuable middle round picks to shore up your running back, wide receiver or quarterback positions by considering a few solid defenses that you should be able get in the later rounds.
There are three defenses I believe are ready to make a fantasy impact for you in 2007. In no particular order, here are those defenses and the reason why I think you should consider them.
Green Bay Packers - When it comes to the Pack, you know that Brett Favre and Donald Driver can put up some fantasy numbers but I bet you didn’t know that their defense was slowly becoming a factor last season. In 2006 they ended up 3rd in interceptions, 4th in sacks and 12th in total defense.
In 2007 they return every player that matters. Aaron Kampman was practically a one man gang with an NFC best 15.5 sacks. Their first round pick AJ Hawk, who led team in tackles as a rookie last year, will be on the hunt once again but with a full year of NFL experience. And don’t forget about Charles Woodson who had 8 picks last year.
They also, play in a division that has a few suspect offenses and get to play outdoors in the cold during the fantasy football playoffs.
The only knock I have on them is they are among the league worst on special teams but with all of the upside and the bargain basement price (everywhere except Wisconsin that is), who cares. Grab ‘em.
Oakland Raiders - As bad as the Raiders where last year, they where pretty damn good on the defensive side of the ball. Despite playing with an offense that had virtually no time of possession and no ability to score they where able to finish 1st against pass and 3rd in total defense in 2007.
This unit also returns intact lead by a resurgent Warren Sapp who housed 10 sacks last year. They also have added former Jacksonville Jaguars stalker SS Donovin Darius.
With a weak early schedule they should be able to hit the ground running and gain confidence as they approach the middle of the season. If they can get any production out their offense this year, and I think they will, they should be able to post some solid fantasy numbers in 2007.
New York Jets - All the talk in Gotham is about Thomas Jones but the defense will also be a factor in 2007. Although they were middle of the league in sacks and turnovers in 2006, they were 6th in points allowed and have done some work in the offseason. They already have an above average linebacker corp so they upgraded secondary in the draft and improved the depth up front with the addition of David Bowens from Miami and Kenyon Coleman from Dallas.
Bottom line, with a better running game, they should be able to control the ball and keep the defense fresh more often. Plus, Mangini has a year under his belt and showed last year that he was paying attention in New England. He knows how to maximize the talent on his team and put guys in position to make plays. Not a bad defense to have on your fantasy squad.
There you have it, my defensive sleeper picks for 2007; the Green Bay Packers, Oakland Raiders and New York Jets. While everyone else is grabbing elite defenses in the middle rounds. you can deepen your bench with confidence knowing that three other future elites will be waiting much later.

1How do the packers have such few divisional offense opponents to face? Can you say Detroit? I know you may be suffering from talent lag, due to the last few years, however I’ll list this out for you. Kitna, Williams, Furrey, (Calvin) Johnson, (Tatum) Bell, Jones, (T.J.) Duckett all coordinated by Mike Martz. Thats Yikes!!! for the Pack.
Then you have the Vikes new duo at RB, admitting a lack of QB and WR. And the Bears WR corp with now one sole back in Benson.
I’m sorry, it might be good personell there in G.B., but they better stay on their A game

2Thanks for the comment Taylor. Great to hear from you.
The key word here is “suspect.” Everyone you mentioned looks great…on paper. Let me break it down.
Lions - They are missing their starting running back and Tatum Bell can’t hold on to the ball (or he might still be in Denver). Kitna can throw for yardage BUT has thrown the ball up for grabs often. Bottom line, there are turnovers there and the Packers excelled in that area last year. Suspect!(also…Calvin Williams hasn’t signed a contract yet).
Chicago - We all know how miserable Rex Grossman can look. How will the loss of Thomas Jones affect them? We don’t know. Suspect!
Minnesota - I have been a passionate Vikes fan since I can remember. That said, who know what T-Jack will do at QB (especially on the road in a hostile environment). The highly paid line underperformed last year so that is a question. No proven wide recievers. And there is still “slight” concern over AP’s durability. Suspect!
Believe me it pains me as a die hard Vikes fan to give props to the dark side BUT I as a fantasy football analyst I have to call’em as I see ‘em.
Don’t be a stranger!

3Touche! You are exactly right. Didn’t mean to sound condesending at all either, I guess that’s my lions pride showing through with some…unproven (suspect) excitement. But we do share a vikings passion, as I was raised in Minnesota and still live in Minneapolis. My father however raised me a PT Detroit fan. The funny part of this whole argument is: at anytime during the NFL season you can walk in to a sports bar, whether it be in MN, WI, IL, or MI and the bar will be segregated as per Bears, Lions, Vikes or Packer Backer. Good to hear that you share my thoughts down to the T, and for future comments I’ll try to keep down the Bias.
Good Looking, and keep up the good work as I need something to keep my interested and awake at work.

4No problem Taylor,
It is fun to have people fire stuff like this at me. Although I have been playing FF for a long, long time, I am a rookie when it comes to sharing my opinions with the world. It makes me dot my i’s and cross my t’s when putting this stuff together.
It is very true about the segregation that goes on around here. I’m in Winona and there are fans from every team. One of my best friends was brought up on all-teams Detroit, in particualar the Lions, much like yourself and we have these discussions every year at this time.
Thanks again and Like I said, don’t be a stranger. Subscribe and come back often. Also, check out the fantasy football podcast I co-host on the Bruno Boys Fantasy site over at http://mvn.com/nfl-fantasy. It will be nice to have someone around who understands the “norse division.”

6Some great picks there, and I have to weigh in as a Lions-hater. Can you say over-rated?
So would you take these teams over D’s such as Pittsburgh or Carolina or Miami or Philly? Those 4 should be easy to get in most drafts, too.
I just discovered your blog via the fantasy football librarian. You do good work. I’ve added a link to your blog on mine. Check it out and see if I’m link-worthy on your end.
Thanks.

7Thanks TJI,
I will check your blog out!
As far as the defenses go, taking one of those depends on who else is available and what my team needs at the time the run on D’s starts (or nears the end).
Usually, unless someone is hording D’s there are some you can pick up and play match-ups with. I like to make my skill positions deep (trade bait, insurance, etc).
Thanks again,
Corey
